Shankar Prakash


Shankar Prakash is the Research & Programme Coordinator for the WEMS initiative. His research focuses on understanding the wildlife crime prevention initiatives of various conservation stakeholders in the protected areas of Tamil Nadu (India). He is involved in extensive field studies in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, working alongside forest rangers, anti-poaching watchers, and the local community. As an intern for the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, he has prepared a comprehensive report on the “wildlife crime database management system.” He is now collaborating with Dr. Remi Chandran, researching on the WEMS initiative and particularly on information sharing policy in addressing wildlife crime.
He has participated in the “Winter School on Environmental Crime” organised by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the Italian Society for International Organisation (SIOI), Rome, Italy. He was one of the rapporteurs for the 14th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice held in Kyoto, Japan.
Shankar Prakash holds a bachelor’s degree in Religion, Philosophy & Sociology and a master’s degree in Criminology & Criminal Justice Administration. He completed his PhD, which explored the wildlife crime prevention measures of conservation stakeholders in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. His works can be followed on research gate and twitter.
